Drug and Alcohol Information and Awareness Event for Education Providers

Oct 14, 2022

Drogheda Implementation Board was set up late last year after the publication of the Geiran Report on Community Safety and Wellbeing in Drogheda. This report was a response to the activities of organised crime in the Drogheda area, often called ‘the drug feud’. A feature of this feud was the participation of very young people and the impact of drug (mis)use on young people in our communities. They are hosting an event for drug and alcohol awareness and information event for education providers in the Drogheda area at Primary, Secondary, and Further Education level on Wednesday 26th October from 9.30am to 1.30pm in the Barbican Centre. The event is a follow on from a highly successful event that was held in May 2022 and is being organised by the Policing and Drugs subgroup of the Drogheda Implementation Board.

The event in May was attended by almost 100 people from across 19 different education providers in Drogheda and East Meath. The organisers have designed a programme of speakers based on feedback from that event with areas covered such as An Garda Siochána updates; supports for under 18s in relation to drug and alcohol use; youth services and supports; family supports and health and wellbeing. The aim of the event is to showcase the many services and resources available in Drogheda so that staff in education settings can feel informed when engaging with students and parents. Principals, Deputy Principals, Guidance Counsellors, TY Coordinators, SEN, Home School Community Liaisons and other school staff who provide pastoral care are invited to attend the event. There will be an opportunity for attendees to network with one another and each other and refreshments will be provided.
